This picture sums up March for me. In the warmth of one afternoon this week we build our much anticipated Christmas present of a replacement trampoline that is bigger than our last. The next day before school Lewis and Lovett rushed outside to get a few good bounces in before the bus came. The weather, of course had changed course from above freezing and sunny to 17 and a vigorous snow squall that dropped a few inches of snow in an hour.
The excitement of loading the pigs has subsided and this week we got some of the pork cuts back from the processor, and we sent others down to the smokehouse to be made into bacon, sausage and other goodies. When we have all the cuts sorted we will add them to inventory and we’ll soon have some of our favorite pork products back in stock.
In the next month the farm will begin to change rapidly, we are gearing up for the first batch of chicks for the season, which means getting the brooder ready, and preparing the field coops. Temperature and weather in March varies wildly and baby chicks are tender creatures. So we will prepare a space that is warm and free of cold drafts.
March also brings the sugaring season and maple syrup. We tap over 400 maple trees, collect the sap and boil the sap down to make maple syrup. So far the weather has remained cold and we’re waiting for our first big run.
On the cold mornings spring still feels far away, but then the warmth of the afternoon sun confirms her arrival will be here in a few short weeks. Happy March.
